Create an album cover using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator Purpose:
Students will create an original album cover utilizing original drawings, Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator. The overarching BIG idea is that students can connect the principles of design and elements to art to a particular STYLE of music. The album should be imaginative and creative. The design can contain vector images while demonstrating an understanding of composition, color design, font choice, and texture. The design should connect to the style of music chosen. Students should prepare this design in their sketchbooks and create using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Directions:
1. Plan in your sketchbook: Who will you use? What is the theme of the piece? What type of music is it? Choose 4-5 colors that match that style of music. Pick three album covers that you will use as the source of your inspiration and place on your wiki for reference.
2. Plan: Using those three album covers as inspiration, draw out in your sketchbook three mini sketches including some of the elements you like in the 3 album cover examples. Now think about composition: arrangement of the images. Use yourself as the lead singer, and if you want, include friends as part of the band. Now where to place them? What should you be wearing? What is the name of your band? Where are you going to place the name of the band on the cover?
3. Image size should be 4x5 inches, 300 resolution. Create three versions in Photoshop, changing the colors and the arrangement. Perhaps something changes while making it in photoshop. Name each one Album #1, Album #2, and Album #3. After creating the three versions, discuss with your neighbor and other classmates on which one is best.
4. Take those suggestions and recreate.
5. Label final version on wiki and include the other versions that were not chosen. Write a reflection on why you picked the version that you did, what were the successes of the project, and what would you change if you could do it again. Include within reflection vocabulary and description of the process. Talk about how the visual elements REFLECTS THE MUSICAL STYLE.
